Maili Elementary School is on the Leeward Coast between Waianae and Nanakuli. It opened in 1963 and is at the center of the Ma'ili community. The student population is fairly transient and multi-ethnic. Ma'ili families are typically low to middle income, and many receive some form of public assistance. The community is basically residential, but also includes small businesses, churches, poultry or vegetable farms, health care facilities, and Lualualei Naval Communications Facility. Ma'ili Elementary School has a SCC, or School Community Council, in which parents, the community, teachers, administrators, and other staff members work together to ensure that student academic progress is being made and that the school's budget supports those initiatives.
