Makalapa Elementary School

Makalapa Elementary School opened in 1971 and was designed in the open classroom arrangement popular at that time. Presently, about 70% of our students are military connected. The rest of our population comes from Foster Village, Alii Plantation, and Cross Pointe, which are housing developments in our community. These areas are primarily of Asian and Polynesian decent. Since school year 1996-97, Makalapa has been on a modified school calendar.

Success for All, a school-wide comprehensive reform reading program, was adopted in 1999-00. In 2002-2003, WorldLab, a comprehensive program social studies and science was adopted. We continue to use these programs at Makalapa Elementary as we have found these to be valuable to students' success.

To increase the capacity of our teachers to serve the diverse language arts and math needs of our students, Makalapa adopted the Accelerated Reader program in 2000-2001 and the Accelerated Math program in 2001-2002. These continue to be used today to encourage reading enjoyment and math skill/fact practice.

In preparation for SY 2005-06,Makalapa Elementary began staff development on the Step Up To Writing (teacher training in a writing program that has been adopted by the Radford Complex), standards-based reporting, school-wide grading policy, portfolios, and curriculum mapping.

Under the guidelines from Act 51, we elected our SCC board members. Transitioning from the SCBM to the SCC began in 2004- 05. Makalapa Elementary completed our first Academic and Financial Plan in year 2005-06. We have focused our attention in trying to determine clear quarterly goals in the areas of reading, writing and math. Teachers continue to use Curriculum Mapping as we integrate common assessments, writing activities in content areas and the GLOs into our curriculum. Makalapa invested in Everyday Math and 6 Traits + 1 writing programs this year as we focused on language arts and math.

As we anticipate the need to report formative data for our school, we have invested in the PLATO Edu-Test computer system. We are currently analyzing data reports to see if direct correlations can be made with HSA scores. Teachers are using this program to create formative assessments that can be used in the classroom to assist instructional techniques and strategies.

To help meet the needs of our Special Education population, we will be implementing a Learning Center that will service target students exclusively for language arts and math. The Learning Center will support our tutoring program and provide additional hours for preventative reading and math assistance in the afternoon.
