Maui Waena Intermediate School (MWIS) is located in the residential area of Kahului in central Maui. It is the largest middle school on the island, with an enrollment of 1017 students, and services students predominantly from Kahului with a few from outlying areas of Spreckelsville and Wailuku.
The community of Kahului was originally started to provide residences for families of plantation workers. It has since grown and developed to include families of various occupations and socioeconomic standings.
Maui Waena Intermediate School is the home of the proud and majestic Falcon. Falcon Pride is evident daily at MWIS from wearing of the school colors of red, black, and white every Wednesday by students and faculty members alike to participation in various extraand co-curricular activities ranging from athletic and academic competitions to community service projects. The teaching and learning community of Maui Waena has committed itself to meeting all grade level standards and the state's General Learner Outcomes using middle school practices, differentiation, and TRIBES.
Due to Act 51, Maui Waena began, during school year 2004-2005, transitioning from having a School Community Based Management (SCBM) Council, to having a School Community Council (SCC). The SCC actively promotes involvement of all segments of the community: administrators, teachers, classified staff, students, parents, and the community.
