Maunaloa School is one of four K-6 rural elementary schools located on the island of Molokai. The first classroom building was built in 1937 on 10 acres. Our school is situated at the southeast corner of Maunaloa town. Until Dole Food's closure, the majority of Maunaloa's community members were employed by pineapple plantation companies. Nearly 10,000 acres of leased agricultural land was returned to Molokai Ranch with Dole Foods closure. Molokai Ranch rebuilt the town's roads, water, sewer, drainage, electrical and communication utilities. Old plantation homes were replaced with newly built family and rental homes. To date, Maunaloa town is supported by a general store, Triplex movie theatre, gas station, post office, parks, small businesses, and a 22-unit Lodge.
Hawaiian / Part-Hawaiian students comprise the largest proportion (83%) of our student population. Eighty (80%) percent of our students receive federal lunch subsidies. Maunaloa School was identified for No Child Left Behind (NCLB) "restructuring." During this school year, the school's staff has been working with an external provider, Educational Testing Services (ETS) / Pulliam. These services have included professional development, planning, implementation, assessment, and evaluation of research based practices. Maunaloa School operates under School Community Council.
