Mililani Waena Elementary School Speech-Language Services
Speech-language therapy is a related service under the umbrella of special education addressing problems in speech articulation, oral language, voice quality and resonance, and fluency (stuttering). A student is found eligible when meeting the criteria as set forth by federal IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act) rules and regulations. For eligibility, the student's disability must adversely affect his educational performance.
Teachers and parents are able to request an informal consultation in which the speech pathologist will briefly screen the student to determine whether a formal evaluation is warranted. If a formal evaluation is warranted, a meeting is then convened to initiate the referral process in accordance to federal guidelines and timelines.
Speech-language therapy is a small group setting.

Mililani Waena Elementary School CSSS (Comprehensive Student Support Services)
The Comprehensive Student Support System (CSSS) is the Department of Education's umbrella or construct for ensuring a continuum of supports and services that provide the social, emotional, and physical environments to help all students learn and meet the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards. This continuum begins in the inclusive classroom, with differentiated classroom practices as the base of support for each student. This support extends beyond the classroom to include school and community resources, initiative, and programs as well as appropriate services procured from private providers.
The focus of the CSSS is on prevention and early intervention. CSSS provides students, families, teachers, principals, and others with the support they need to ensure that students succeed. CSSS ensures that schools have the procedures and ability to respond to a broad range of student needs. The supports and formality of the service delivery process match the severity, complexity, and frequency of the student's needs. CSSS eincourages "working smarter," as opposed to working harder. It is a sustem that requires teaming, organization, accountability, and a proactive support with high expectations for all students.
