Moanalua High School was established in 1972 and graduated its first class in 1975. It is located on the fringe of metropolitan Honolulu on the rim of the Salt Lake crater. It serves approximately 2,000 students on a campus of 30 acres, with 80 classrooms. Its student body is comprised of various ethnic groups that include Filipino, Japanese, Caucasian, Chinese, Korean, African American, Hawaiian and Part Hawaiian, Hispanic, and Samoan backgrounds. These students come from diverse families that span the economic spectrum. Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy personnel dependents comprise about 21% of the student body.
The school has a comprehensive curriculum, with college preparatory, advanced placement (AP), career-technical education, ESLL, and special education. The school has two Learning Centers (Media Communications & Technology, and World Languages), an outstanding Music Program, and the state's largest AFJROTC Program. Moanalua High School was recently accredited in 2006 by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Moanalua High's School Community Council (SCC) was formed in June 2005 to replace SCBM as part of its governance system.
