Moloka'i High School (MHS) is located on a 27-acre expanse in a Hawaiian Homestead community approximately seven miles from Kaunakakai town where the state and county offices, hospital, doctors' offices, banks, library, family-owned grocery stores and gas stations are located. All four elementary schools and the one intermediate school feed into this single public high school on Moloka'i. During the 2004-2005 school year, the Department of Education separated the Intermediate School from the High School, creating two distinct schools on the Ho'olehua campus.
In addition to the core subjects and electives, Moloka'i High School offers a Hawaiian Language Immersion Program, English as the Second Language, Advanced Placement, Gifted and Talented, Honors, Alternative Learning Center, Special Education and Graduation, Reality and Dual Role Skills (GRADS). MHS has also established a Natural Resources Academy (NaRA), which is a project-based, 2-year sequence of learning that utilizes the natural resources of Moloka'i. In the 2006-2007 school year, MHS will implement a project and community based technology course called EAST. Study Skills classes designed to remediate or accelerate a student's individual skills are offered in reading and math. Cocurricular activities provide opportunities for participation in 21 varsity interscholastic teams are also available.
In June of 2006, the Western Association of Schools & Colleges accredited Moloka'i High School for a period of three years until June 30, 2009. At that time, the school will be visited for two days by a WASC team to determine if an extension of up to an additional three years will be recommended.
Since July 2005, Moloka'i High has operated under the advisement of its School Community Council (SCC), which enables shared decisionmaking among its principal, teachers, parents, students, and community members to improve student achievement.
