Established in 1967, Nanakuli High and Intermediate School (NHIS) is the only school in the Leeward District with both intermediate and high school under one administration. The campus extends over 60 acres; recent additions to existing facilities include a new multipurpose cafeteria, eight-classroom building, baseball field, and the athletic complex that has enhanced the school. The Hawaiian Homestead community surrounds NHIS. The school population is predominantly Hawaiian or Part-Hawaiian. Based on the school motto, Kulia I Ka Nuu ("we seek the highest"), NHIS seeks to graduate self-directed learners, complex thinkers, effective communicators, and respectful and culturally sensitive contributing members of society.
In 2006, NHIS was identified as a restructured school as a result of not meeting Adequate Yearly Progress provision of the national legislation known as the "No Child Left Behind" initiative in Math and English Language Arts. In a never-ending effort to improve the standards-based curriculum and instruction offered to the students, NHIS has contracted Educational Testing Services (ETS), formally known as ETS Pulliam, as its restructuring provider.
NHIS has an atmosphere of learning that promotes the students to achieve their best. NHIS offers various courses that address the learning needs and interests of its students. Specialized courses of study are also offered.
The Arts and Communication Learning Center, composed of Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Multi-media, and Musical Arts, offers students the opportunity to participate in integrated projects founded on the principles of project based learning.
The Health Occupations and Professions Exploration (HOPE) partners with a variety of health organizations to prepare students for careers in the health care industry.
The JROTC and Career and Technology Education classes provide students with hands on experiences in career and skill development.
NHIS also provides classes such as band, journalistic writing and production, electronic media, and play production that go beyond the school day, such as after school and/or Saturdays, to give students additional opportunities to take classes that interest them.
NHIS also partners with various community and business organizations to provide students with internship, job shadowing opportunities as well as curriculum enhancement. Examples of these are partnerships with J.W. Marriot at Ihilani Resort and Spa, Alu Like, Obun Hawaii Group, and KITV.
Efforts to involve parents included: Pre-season to Hawaii State Assessment, Ohana Fun Night, Open House, and other parent and community meetings.
