Ni'ihau School is near the village of Puuwai on the Island of Ni'ihau and consists of three classroom buildings and a combination cafeteria and meeting hall. Enrollment at the school fluctuates as children travel to and from Kaua'i for several weeks at a time. Students are first taught in English.
Niihau School reflects the rich culture of the island and their ethnic heritage. The student's learning styles are embedded in their love for music and family. The expression of the arts is evident in the community celebrations such as Graduation.
All efforts to support and improve student achievement at Niihau School must take in consideration of the challenges of transportation, electricity, and others unique to Niihau School. We must also respect the desires and expectations of the community and owners of Niihau that is based on the preservation of ethnic and cultural beliefs.
Niihau School is a Title I school. The focus has been on the improvement of Reading Comprehension and Math Skills. The Niihau teachers and educational assistants participated in two, 2 day training session on Kauai. The Kauai District resource teachers conducted the training session which included the following: Introduction to Learning Process (Reading/Writing), Introduction to Math curriculum, Math texts and manipulatives, SID Task IV/Action Plan, Introduction to Language Arts curriculum, Reading/Writing/Learning Process, Spelling Books, Sourcebook and teacher's guide, Reflections portfolio, Standards, ACCN, Diploma concerns, GLOs, Awareness of Essential Standards, Deconstructing of Target Standards and Sea creatures book. Follow-up sessions will be conducted in the SY 2006-2007.
Niihau is SCC school. The school is also focused on meeting the highly qualified teacher requirement for NCLB. Niihau School and the Kauai District Office is working together with Kauai Community College and the University of Hawaii, in supporting and assisting the teachers and educational assistance meet the certification and credit requirements of NCLB.
Efforts have been made to establish projects to support the infrastructure for the electrical needs of the school. The project will assist in the powering of basic equipment and computers in the classroom.
