Niu Valley Middle School

Niu Valley Middle School, Home of the Lancers, is located in East Honolulu and serves the communities of Hawaii Kai (Kalama Valley, Kamehame, Mariner's Ridge, Koko Head, Poipu, Hahaione), Kuliouou, Niu Valley, Hawaii Loa Ridge, Wailupe Valley, Aina Haina and Waialae Iki Ridge. The school community is largely upper-middle in income level, with nearly half of the adults being college graduates.

Niu Valley Middle School has adopted a middle school philosophy and organization. A pilot class of Grade 6 students was added in the 2005-06 school year; a new beginning for the school's golden anniversary. The entire Kaiser Complex will be moving all Grade 6 classes to Niu Valley in the 2006-07 school year.

The faculty and staff are determined to provide quality student support to meet the unique needs of every student. The school has a strong Academic core curriculum, a thriving Arts program, and a competitive Athletics program: The three A's. The core subject teachers are organized into grade level teams and complimented with teachers of the elective courses. Each student is further assigned to an advisory program--the entire teaching and support faculty implement this program. In addition, there are exploratory courses in the Fine Arts, Educational Technology, Leadership, and Physical Education. Specialized instruction is provided for students identified as Gifted and Talented, Special Education, and English as a Second Language.

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accredited Niu Valley Middle School in 2001 for a period of six (6) years with a three (3) year review. The school is currently preparing for an on-site visit by the WASC accreditation team in early 2007. Niu Valley Middle School's School Community Council (SCC) completed its inaugural year of overseeing the school in the 2005-'06 school year. Its volunteer parent support organization is called the Friends of Niu Valley.

Niu Valley Middle School was awarded a banner from the Hawaii State Department of Education/Frito Lay Blue Ribbon Program in 2003 and 2005 in recognition of its eligibility for national-level consideration. Lancers have represented the school well in state, district and school competition in academics, the performing and visual arts and in athletics.
