Nuuanu Elementary is a small school nestled in Nuuanu Valley amid the rising cliffs of the Koolau Mountains. There is a panoramic view of Honolulu Harbor to the south and the summit of the Pali to the north. Nuuanu School was first established in 1960 when it was determined that Maemae School was overcrowded, and that there was a need for a second elementary school within Nuuanu Valley. The school's unique design is based on multi-unit single-story redwood buildings constructed with the neighborhood homes in mind.
The school vision: At Nuuanu Elementary School, we are learners for life. The school believes that all children can learn and succeed. The faculty and staff help children develop their skills, knowledge, and attitudes to prepare them to live as contributing citizens in a world of rapid technological changes. It is Nuuanu's mission to develop and nurture the knowledge, skills, and capabilities of all so that we are able to use information wisely, adapt to change, and pursue lifelong learning.
In addition to the regular instruction program, Nuuanu School offers language arts enrichment for gifted and talented children, computer and technology education, special education, and limited English proficiency services. Students also have the opportunity to participate in service learning projects such as Student Council, Peer Mediation, Technology Club, and Junior Police Officers (JPO).
Nuuanu receives support and assistance from the Nuuanu School Community Council, an established Parent Community Networking Center (PCNC), and parent teacher organization, Aikane O Nuuanu. Fundraising activities, Campus Beautification projects, the school's annual Family Fun Nite events, as well as classroom activities & projects also invite parents to become involved in the school.
