Pa'auilo Elementary and Intermediate School is located in a rural setting on the Hamakua Coast of the Island of Hawai'i. The campus is arguable the best kept in the state, and presents an ideal learning and working environment for its students and faculty. The campus is nestled on the slopes of Mauna Kea and over looks the Pacific Ocean on fourteen acres. Pa'auilo School is the only K-9 school in the DOE system.
The ideal learning and working environment can be attributed to excellent staff and an ideal working student-teacher ratio (enrollment 240). Believing that all children can learn, the staff continually strives to improve the instructional strategies and curriculum to challenge every child in our diverse population. Due to its highly regarded reputation, a large number (approximately 44%) of students attend the school on "geographic exceptions." Pa'auilo is designated as "Title I" school, and went through the FOL process, which resulted in receiving a six-year accreditation from WASC (2010).
One of the school's goals is to challenge the students in being responsible to meet a level of proficiency in a standards-based curriculum. Furthermore, students are held to high expectations, challenging curriculum, effective teaching practices and an array of comprehensive student support services. The school community and stakeholders have focused on improving instruction and student achievement. Teachers collect, analyze data and reflect on their instruction continuously to ensure achievement and have an impact on students and what they learn.
Additional learning takes place with the following enrichment activities after school:
- Creative dance
- hula
- ceramics
- fiber art
- crafts
- sports and games
- and homework laboratory.
The school is in its fifth year of implementing Success For All, a researched-based reading reform model, in grades K-5. The intermediate teachers have gone through GEAR UP training, which provides strategies in language arts and mathematics to assist the students in the achievement of standards. Pa'auilo has implemented the Focus On Learning process, which has lead to a six years accreditation ending on February 2010.
We strive to have each student reach his/her potential socially, emotionally, culturally, academically, and physically. There are a number of opportunities that promote the partnership between home, school and the community. During the school year the annual Blue and White Fair, and May Festival are held on the school campus. The fair features an all day kanikapila program, country store, silent auction, and many ethnic foods. Pa'auilo School is the only public school that participated in a 10-team soccer league.
This year the school fielded baseball teams for T-ball, coach pitch, minors and major little league baseball. Agriculture, Math Investigations, and FOSS are some of the innovation programs currently happening. There is a very active and successful 4-H program that teaches animal husbandry. Core subjects are integrated into the agriculture program, which brings learning alive and shows relevance to student.
Pa'auilo School is committed to providing all students with a quality standards based education, in a safe and nurturing environment that enables our students to be well rounded and successful.
