Pahoa High and Intermediate School (PHIS) occupies 23 acres in the lower Puna District on the island of Hawaii, a geographic area half the size of Oahu. Puna contains a widely diverse population with an overall socioeconomic status below state averages. Pahoa Village is connected to the city of Hilo, 26 miles away, by one roadway and has very limited bus service. Most of the working populace is employed in Hilo, while others rely on the limited jobs available in agriculture, the schools and small businesses. PHIS is surrounded by twenty subdivisions, many with little infrastructure; many communities lack public transportation, county water, electricity, telephone, paved roads and shopping centers.Students are bussed to school from these subdivisions. A steadily increasing, substantial number of PHIS students qualify and receive a variety of special services. In spite of the district's geographic size and the diverse population needs, PHIS has been very successful in providing students with opportunities for learning beyond the academic setting.
The music and art programs are fully functioning and include a large number of students in grades 7 through 12. Music programs and art displays are held at least two times a year and are open to the public. Na Pua Mae'ole (music ensemble) offers students an opportunity to interact with professionals in the field giving them unique insights to the subtleties and intricacies of the profession. Students in Na Pua Mae'ole are provided with hands-on experiences and are able to apply their music skills directly in a professional setting both on and off the stage. The agriculture program prepares students by teaching life long skills in agriculture and related fields as well as increasing students' awareness of the global and technological importance of agriculture and its contribution to our well being. Students are taught teamwork, communication, performance and quality standards, leadership and character-building through hands-on learning supported by in-class activities.
