Palolo Elementary School

Palolo Elementary School is a K-5 public school located in Palolo Valley in the Kaimuki area of Honolulu. Palolo first opened its doors in September of 1921. Its first buildings were converted into military barracks and the school was next to a golf course. Later, the golf course was turned into a public housing project that is now Palolo Valley Homes, in which most of our students reside.

Because of its geographic location, Palolo Elementary has a high number of students on free-reduced lunch. The school year began with 98% on free and reduced lunch. There is also a high immigrant population at Palolo Elementary. Coupled with these concerns, Palolo Elementary is also showered with a rich diversity of cultures, from Hawaiian, Micronesian, Marshallese, Samoan, Tongan, Vietnamese, Laotian and others. These factors present challenges to the school as well as to the community.

The importance of learning the English language is evident throughout the Valley. Palolo Elementary is focusing on Literacy and Math in order to meet the initiatives of NCLB. Student achievement has increased and will continue to do so with a committed staff and necessary resources. After making yearly positive gains since 2002, having been in corrective action status 04-05 under Los Angeles Department for School Reform, and under the Edison Alliance Model for one year 05-06 of restructuring, Palolo looks forward to continue to move ahead with the restructuring efforts of another year 06-07 with the Edison Alliance Model.
