Pauoa Elementary School was first built in 1847, on the Hawaiian Church Property. Until 1892, all lessons were taught in the Hawaiian language. Eventually the school was moved to its present location, beginning with two classrooms.
Our school is unique in its strong support from its parents and the neighboring community. In SY 1999-2000, the Pauoa PTA received the "Creative Membership Award" from the State PTA, to the school who found the most creative ways to recruit and maintain the involvement of its members. Pauoa was a co-recipient of the "One Voice for Every Child Award," which recognizes schools whose parent involvement surpasses their student enrollment.
Pauoa School recently started to operate under School Community Council (SCC). Under the SCC, the commitment of all the members of the school's community come together in a formal, improvementfocused governing body for the school.
The staff is highly committed to and involved in the school's improvement initiatives. This is evident in the academic achievement of the students as measured by the Hawaii State Assessment.
As part of the school improvement process, the school has worked on a stronger alignment of the school's professional development program with the standards and learning needs of students. After examining data on student achievement and studying the student's quality of work, Pauoa chose to focus their efforts on Reading and problem solving processes in Math.
It takes many people to provide children with the best learning environment, and at Pauoa this is indeed true. The faculty and staff provide exemplary services and support. In addition, the school benefits from the involvement of parents, volunteers and community members.
Pauoa Elementary School's Summary of Progress Report shows how teaching, learning and assessments are being based and aligned to Hawaii State Standards and Benchmarks. It summarizes progress made in accomplishing school improvement goals.
