Blanche Pope Elementary is a small rural school located on Hawaiian Homestead land in Waimanalo. Established in 1965, the school was named for Della Blanche Romick Pope, the wife of Wills Thomas Pope, Superintendent of Public Instruction in Hawaii from 1910-1913. As founder of the first parent-teacher association, Mrs. Pope was a pioneer in building the public school system in Hawaii.
Servicing students from Pre-K through sixth grade, Blanche Pope has worked to establish and maintain a Family Literacy Program. The school has received grants to implement the first Even Start-Family Literacy Program in the Windward District.
A variety of co-curricular programs, including A+, afterschool tutorial, Kamehameha School's Literacy Instruction & Support K-3, TransPacific Hawaii College grant for short term reading tutoring, and a Beaumont Foundation of America grant for 30 wireless laptop computers used for Language Arts and WorldLab are provided to our Elementary population. Our focus remains on our Success For All (SFA) curriculum as we address student achievement in Reading and Mathematics. Since the inception of the SFA Reading program in 1997, we have adopted SFA's MathWings in the fall of 1999 and WorldLab in the fall of 2000 and continue to provide our students with a comprehensive and challenging curriculum to meet the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards II.
