Pu'ohala Elementary School

Pu'ohala Elementary School's regular program serves students from Pu'ohala Village, Pikoiloa, and Kokohaki. The majority of Pu'ohala's children come from families of modest income. Forty percent of the students qualify for free and reduced meals, allowing for Title I support from the federal government. The ethnic makeup of the school is quite mixed, with Hawaiian, part-Hawaiian, Caucasian, Japanese, and many other groups represented. Five years ago Pu'ohala implemented Math Investigations in grades Kindergarten through grade 5 and the Connected Math Program in grade 6. For the past two years Grades K through 2 have worked with the scientifically- based Breakthrough to Literacy Reading program for grades Kindergarten through grade 2. The reading program for Grades 3 through 6 for the past two years has been the standardsbased Harcourt Trophies series. Thirty percent of the student body is enrolled in the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program (HLIP) that was established over fifteen years ago. All subjects in the HLIP are taught in the Hawaiian language with English introduced at the Fifth grade level. Students come from as far away as Hauula and Waimanalo to attend HLIP. There is a feeling of warmth and 'ohana as teachers and staff strive to build a safe and caring environment.

The school enacted specific reforms based upon data gathered from the Hawaii State Assessment as well as SAT scores. An Intervention Plan focuses upon standards-based teaching and learning with an emphasis on math and reading. These efforts are directed at increasing student achievement and providing quality student support. Regular assessments include monthly math responses, DIBELS testing three times a year, regular reading unit evaluations and the data points obtained two times a year for reading and math from Benchmark Tracker.

Academic achievement is complemented with performing arts and an after school enrichment program for qualifying students. The staff organizes an annual Curriculum Fair where student work is displayed for parent and community review. Students participate in community and statewide art, poetry and writing contests. Pu'ohala students have won monetary awards and recognition from the Lions Club, Board of Water Supply, Hawaiian Humane Society and OHA. This year a member of the Pu'ohala teaching staff was a district nominee for the Teacher of the Year award.
