Major General William R. Shafter Elementary School

Major General William R. Shafter Elementary School has served the military families who reside on Fort Shafter Army Post since 1951. Of the school's current student population, approximately 95% are dependents of military personnel based in Hawaii. Shafter has a very high student rate of transience because of frequent military rotations.

Some interesting facts about Shafter School:

  • Shafter was one of the first schools in Hawaii to operate under School/Community-Based Management (SCBM).
  • Shafter is one the few Hawaii elementary schools to be accredited, receiving six years of accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), in January 2003.

 

Shafter has many programs to promote student, parent, and community involvement. Listed below are major activities at Shafter.

  • PTA events such as Make a Difference Day, Field Day, Movie Nights, & Bingo/Pizza Nights.
  • Family Literacy Bags and Children As Authors Programs.
  • Tutoring Program with parent, military, and community volunteers trained as tutors.
  • Partnerships with the 39th MP Detachment, 25th Infantry Division, and U.S. Army Hawaii and Tripler Army Medical Center (Project Assist).
  • Student Activities: Student Council, Junior Police Officers (J.P.O.), Greeter's Club, Library Club, Reading Buddies, Classroom Buddies, and Litter Picker Uppers.
  • Spanish and Hawaiian Studies Programs.
  • Primary School Adjustment Program (PSAP) assisting students in grades K to 3 to make smooth transitions to a new school.
  • Counseling for students having difficulty with transitioning, parent's deployment, and/or social skills.
  • Grades 4-6 Gifted and Talented Language Arts program with a focus on writing and production of "I" movies on school life.
  • Parent involvement activities, such as the Science Fest and Brown Bag Lunch Math Activities, to promote parent/child interaction.

 

Our school faculty has been organized into a variety of groups to implement our school action plan goals over the past three years. These groups include:

  • Grade level articulation teams (teachers, Curriculum coordinator, complex resource teachers)
  • Leadership team (teachers, staff, administrator)
  • School Community Council (teachers, staff, parents, student council president, administrator, community members)
  • Positive Behavior Support Cadre (teachers, parents)
