Waiahole Elementary School

Waiahole Elementary is a rural school nestled in majestic Waiahole Valley. It is a school full of old traditions kept alive by generations of families living in this valley dwarfed by stunning cliffs. As one of the oldest and smallest schools on Oahu, Waiahole School has one teacher per grade level (PreK to 6). Due to its unique small size, students are provided with the individual attention that enables them to thrive and succeed. Waiahole is a Title 1 school and therefore, receives federal funds to address curriculum needs.

As part of NCLB, students receive Supplementary Educational Services after school to strengthen their reading and math skills. In its fourth year of the ARTS FIRST GRANT, art education is an integral part of the curriculum. Teachers integrate the visual arts, drama, and music into standards-based lessons that link student achievement to reading comprehension, writing, and mathematical thinking and problem solving, through clear grade-level standards, benchmarks, and schoolwide assessments.

Waiahole students do especially well in the visual arts and this year, outstanding winners have their paintings on display at the Honolulu Convention Center for one year. Aiming to achieve a well-balanced curriculum, students are encouraged to develop their minds and bodies through participation in extracurricular activities such as JPO and Student Council. It is the goal of the school to have all students participate in at least one extracurricular activity. The school library has 100 books per child, making it a grand total of approximately 10,000 books in the school library collection. Students enjoy visiting the library at recess and they look forward to the two Book Fairs held throughout the year.

Parents are expected to become involved in the school by serving on the School Community Council. Likewise, the Ohana (school PTA) sponsors several school activities which provide additional opportunities for parents to support their child's education. The school continually looks to partnerships with the military and local businesses, so the school improvement process demonstrates a commitment among various role groups to create a positive learning environment and school affiliation. The school is the heart of the community that demonstrates a strong sense of pride and ownership in the school's activities.
