Waiakea Elementary School (WES) is situated on 16 acres and was established at its present site on Hilo's Puainako Street in 1963. WES was built as a replacement for the old Waiakea-Kai Elementary School. WES focuses on the core areas of Language Arts, (reading and writing), Math, Science, and Social Studies. The school also has resource areas such a Physical Education, Technology, and Music. The school offers supplemental services through the following programs: Special Education, English for Second Language Learners, Gifted and Talented (grades 3 -5), Primary School Adjustment Program (PSAP-for grades Kindergarten to 3) and school-wide Title I.
Waiakea Elementary School has a half-time Parent Community Network Coordinator (PCNC), funded through Title I. Our PCNC publishes the school newspaper, in-services volunteers, sits on the Positive Behavior Support Cadre and the school's Family Focus Team and serves as a liaison between families and the school. WES also hired a Student Council Advisor to coordinate student activities. For the school year 2005-06, WES was fortunate enough to have two (2) VISTA volunteers to recruit volunteers and help with the tutoring of students before and after school. The VISTA volunteers will be back another school year 2006-07.
