Waiakea High School

Waiakea High School is a comprehensive high school located across the street from the University of Hawai'i-Hilo campus. Beginning in the 2002-03 school year, the school embarked on a process of school redesign in accordance with a federal Smaller Learning Communities grant. Currently, the school belongs to a consortium of thirteen other public high schools that have created 9thand 10th Grade Houses and Career Academies. In the 2005 school year, all 9th graders are currently enrolled in Houses and approximately 2/3 of the 10th graders (250 students) are enrolled in 10th grade. In the 2005-06 school year, the Arts & Communication Academy, Business Academy, Industrial Technology & Engineering Academy, Pacific Rim Cultures & Natural Resources Academy have been implemented. In the 2006-07 school year, all students will be placed in either academies are 9-10th grade houses.

Student achievement and meeting the Hawai'i Content and Performance standards are Waiakea's most important priorities. The hard work and dedication of staff is a source of great pride, with excellent academic results.

Overall, 10th grade students at Waiakea High School have scored higher than the passing proficiency levels set by the Hawai'i Department of Education for the past three years. However, when the data is disaggregated, students in the disadvantaged (low income) group do not meet proficiency levels in reading and math.

Waiakea High School was awarded a six-year accreditation in 2000 by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) and operates under the School Community Council. In February, 2006, the school was visited by a WASC team in anticipation of accreditation.
