Waiakea Intermediate School (WIS) is located in the Waiakea District of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. WIS is the middle school in the Waiakea complex of schools comprised of the high school and two elementary feeder schools. All of WIS students belong to an interdisciplinary team, which is made up of the core subject areas of English (Language Arts), social studies, math, and science as well as non-core areas of physical education/health, fine arts and basic practical arts. In addition to teaming, WIS also provides opportunities to reinforce social and character development through our daily Advisory Program.
Our 7 period rotational schedule provides extended learning opportunities for those students who demonstrate a need. Using the Hawaii State Assessment Program and school level assessments, identified students take a "double block" of reading, writing and/or math, as appropriate. In addition, the 7 period schedule allows for a strong "elective/exploratory" program. Students are able to pursue areas of interest in courses such as Band, Ukulele, fine arts, hands-on science, yearbook, multi-media productions, leadership, and study skills.
WIS students consistently demonstrate excellence as evidenced by their outstanding achievements in mathematics competitions, science fairs, History Day competitions, spelling and geography bee, athletic events, and Concert Band and Ukulele Band performances. The WIS community is committed to meeting the needs of all middle level students!
