Waiakeawaena Elementary School

Waiakeawaena Elementary School serves a heterogeneous student population in Grades K-5. Located in the more populated area of the city approximately 40,000 people, it represents a culturally diverse population. One of the largest elementary schools on the Big Island, it encompasses 8 acres, of which 3.75 acres strictly for school use. The remaining 4.25 acres used as playground for the school and County of Hawaii.

Since 1997 Waiakeawaena's SCBM worked collaboratively with school/community to define the school's belief's, mission and implement the SID action plan and has implemented a modified school calendar since 2001. This school year (2004-05), the Waiakeawaena Community worked at transitioning to the School Community Council.

The language arts curriculum reflects a balanced literacy curriculum using literature, reader's and writer's workshop and word study. Throughout the curriculum critical thinking is infused to nurture important thinking skills.

Unique programs are: science gifted and talented program, the only elementary school band in Hilo and environmental education inquiry for teachers and students-Waiakea Complex.
