Waialua High and Intermediate School is located at the foot of Mount Kaala on the north shore of Oahu, in the midst of a rural agricultural community. The school was established in 1936 and serves the neighborhoods of Mokuleia, Waialua, Haleiwa, Kawailoa, and Pupukea. Since the closing of the Waialua Sugar Mill in 1996, WHIS has experienced a steady decline in enrollment.
The student population is ethnically diverse, with a wide range of strengths and needs. Teachers and staff members are actively involved and committed to creating a safe, caring and nurturing learning environment. There are thirty eight athletic teams and eight co-curricular clubs.
The Robotics and Electric Vehicle programs have been recognized for outstanding achievement. In March, 2006, the Electric Vehicle team earned the first place Overall Award in Hawaiian Electric's Annual Electron Marathon held at Ford Island. They also placed first in the national Electrathon Grand Prix Overall Competition held in Portland, Oregon in May 2006. They also won the "Design Innovation Award."
