Wai'anae Elementary School

Waianae Elementary School is located on Leeward Oahu, along the beautiful Waianae-Nanakuli coastal shoreline. The school is one of the oldest on Oahu, celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2005, and services a predominantly Hawaiian and Part-Hawaiian enrollment. Waianae Elementary qualifies for Title I funding as nearly 80% of our students qualify for the federally funded Free/Reduced Meal Program. The school has been on a single-track, modified year round calendar since 1998. The 2006-2007 school year marks year six of the implementation of the America's Choice School Reform model. Waianae Elementary continues to focus on student achievement of the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards (HCPS) and on updating our Standards Implementation Action Plan. Our Action Plan identifies our major efforts to implement the teaching and learning of the standards and how we monitor and assess student achievement.

Our emphasis to become a standards-based school continues as we focus on:

  • implementation of the HCPS in the core areas and to enable all classrooms to be a standards-driven classroom,
  • improving our classroom assessment of students to reflect a fuller profile of student academic progress, and,
  • adapting our curriculum and instruction, and professional development of our staff and parents to better support student achievement of the HCPS.

The school offers a technology-rich environment with a fully operational local area network with Internet connectivity as well as telephone and closed-circuit television within each classroom. Students participate in programs to meet their specific needs such as Special Education inclusion classes, English for Second Language Learners, PSAP, Counseling, as well as in the federally funded 21st Century Grant and NCLB Supplemental Educational Services tutoring programs. School-wide programs include Hawaiian Studies, Library Skills, Character education and Physical Education. Waianae Elementary fosters positive family involvement through our active Parent Community Networking Center (PCNC) program.
