Waianae Intermediate School is located on the Leeward Coast of Oahu, 35 miles from Honolulu. Seventh and eighth grade students come from the rural communities of Maili, Waianae and Makaha.
The State's Restructuring Plan for WIS was developed by America's Choice, Inc., in response to the No Child Left Behind Act. The plan is implemented school wide and monitored by the Complex Area Superintendent. The newly elected School Community Council replaced WIS' School Community Based Management Council. WIS was accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in spring 2002 for six years and completed a three year Mid-term Review in spring 2005, with a one day visit.
WIS uses America's Choice (standards-based learning, school wide Rituals and Routines, Million Word Campaign, Readers and Writers Workshops, Ramp-Up, Principal's Book of the Month, etc.) and the Connected Mathematics Program to address literacy needs and provides standards-based classes required by the DOE. Middle School practices and core teaming continue to enable WIS to meet the unique needs of adolescent learners. WIS also follows the DOE's Comprehensive Student Support System to ensure that all students receive appropriate services and support.
WIS offers a variety of electives to 7th and 8th graders and has after school tutoring and special interest classes, such as Band, Media, and History Day. Students can also participate in Newswriting, Yearbook, Student Government, Math Team, Spelling Bee, the National Junior Honor Society, and Interschool Sports. WIS' Band and the No Ka Oi Singers perform in the community and throughout Oahu. During the fourth quarter, Media students won first place in the News and Mini Documentary categories at the Olelo Youth Exchange Network 2006 Video Competition.
