Waimalu is located in Aiea, Oahu and is part of the DOE's South Central Complex Area. Established in 1961, Waimalu presently enrolls approximately 630 students. Our vision is, "Waimalu, Where Everyone Soars!" and our missions is, "to enable children to meet the challenges of our changing global society."
For SY 2005-06, Waimalu continued to focus on implementing and assessing the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards (HCPS). Our Action Plan identified our major efforts to implement the teaching and learning of the standards and how we monitor and assess student achievement.
Our emphasis to become a standards-based school continued as we focused on: - The implementation of the HCPS in the core areas and to enable all classrooms to be a standards-driven classroom; - Improving our classroom assessment of students to reflect a fuller profile of student academic progress; - Adapting our curriculum and instruction, and professional development of our staff and parents to better support student achievement of the HCPS; - Becoming a "professional learning community" where staff collaborate, learn, and problem-solve together to provide a truly standards-based education that meets the diverse needs of our students.
This year was the first year for School Community Councils (SCCs) to serve as forums for exchanging ideas about how to improve student achievement among our school's major stakeholders: principal, teachers, school support staff, parents, students and community members. The primary role of our SCC is to participate in a collaborative process to ensure that the needs of all students are addressed in the overall educational plan for our school. Our Academic and Financial Plans were developed highlighting the goals, programs, activities, and resources for the upcoming school year.
Our Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) continues to be an integral part of our Waimalu Ohana. Their support and involvement in our school activities enable our staff to focus on providing many more worthwhile and enriching educational experiences.
In addition to a solid standards-based core curriculum, Waimalu provides the following supplemental programs: gifted/talented, music, physical education, Hawaiiana, art, multi-media, library, and health. The use of technology is integrated and used as a tool to support and enhance the teaching and learning in our classrooms.
