George Washington Middle School

President George Washington Middle School, originally built in 1926, was the first public intermediate school on Oahu. The school, located in Central Honolulu, serves over 1000 students in grades 6, 7 and 8 who reside in the Waikiki, McCully, and Moiliili communities. The school offers a variety of educational opportunities to meet the needs of its diverse population. Using both mandated and school-initiated programs, Washington Middle School has created a rigorous and relevant core curricular program where students achieve to high academic standards. This is balanced with an encore program that offers a wide variety of beginning, intermediate and advanced level courses. Embracing the Middle School Philosophy, the school is organized into interdisciplinary teams as well as core and encore departments and has implemented an advisory program based on our General Learner Outcomes and an exploratory program based on our elective wheel courses.

Washington Middle School continues to seek ways to support its students and families through a Comprehensive Student Support System. This includes school based behavioral health services as well as a new extended core program and an after school instructional program. Support programs continue to provide services to disadvantaged, second language, special needs, at-risk and academically gifted and talented students. Community service remains an integral part of the educational experience and teachers continue to plan service-learning opportunities for their students.

An ongoing partnership between the school's advanced web design and video production class and the Honolulu Fire Department has resulted in a student created training DVD that the Fire Department uses to train its new recruits. The DVD has generated both national and international interest and recognition through the Firefighter's monthly publications. In addition, Washington Middle School students are completing a Fire Inspection Training DVD that will be distributed to all public schools in the state in September 2006 to train school personnel on the successful completion of the School Fire Inspection.

Washington Middle School is fortunate to have an active parent organization, the Washington Middle School Ohana, as well as the School Community Council to assist in school improvement initiatives. The school has created multiple opportunities for parents and community members to participate in our educational programs and activities. These include back to school nights, student performances in band, chorus and orchestra, and drama, parent/teacher conferences and fundraising activities. Our last three parent training sessions included abstinence education through our "Try Wait!" program, standards-based testing, and Internet Safety.
