Located on eleven acres of state property within Wheeler Army Airfield on the island of Oahu, Major Sheldon Wheeler Middle School (WMS) services sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students of predominantly military families (96.4%) from the communities of Wheeler Army Airfield and Schofield Barracks. A small number of students live in nearby residential units off post. WMS feeder schools are Hale Kula, Solomon, and Wheeler Elementary Schools. Hale Kula and Solomon Elementary Schools are located on Schofield Barracks. Wheeler Elementary is located adjacent to WMS on Wheeler Army Airfield.
Wheeler Middle School promotes standards-based instruction, collaborative learning, technology use, and guidance to allow students to become academically prepared for high school and become effective problem solvers.
The faculty and staff at Wheeler Middle School is dedicated and determined to provide quality student support to meet the unique needs of every student. WMS continues to seek ways to address the intellectual, social, physical and emotional needs of adolescent students. Every student is provided a nurturing environment, parent and community involvement, a variety of instructional strategies and educational opportunities, interdisciplinary teaming, and a course of study that includes standards-based curricula, advisory period, exploratory programs, and co-curricular programs. In 2004, WMS was accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges for a period of six years with a mid-term review. In May 2005, in accordance with Act 51, Wheeler Middle School transitioned the current School Community Based Management (SCBM) council to a School Community Council (SCC).
